Innovative Teaching

Innovative teaching is a proactive approach to integrate new teaching strategies and methods into a classroom. Research on education supports the benefits that certain processes, tools and methods have on learning. Innovative teachers implement new methods. Innovative teaching also involves creativity on the part of the teacher. The teacher serves as a guide or consultant as students participate. A primary motive of innovative teaching is encouraging students to engage more in the learning process. When students interact with teachers and peers, they gain more practical experience and retain more information from a class.

Innovative teaching strategies don’t always mean introducing the latest and greatest technology into the classroom. Instead, innovative teaching is the process of proactively introducing new teaching strategies and methods into the classroom. The purpose of introducing these new teaching strategies and methods is to improve academic outcomes and address real problems to promote equitable learningIn many ways, applying innovative teaching strategies to the classroom is a tacit understanding that our teaching methods can be improved. It accepts the need to grow and develop, which is exactly what we ask of our students.

So, innovative teaching strategies start with a growth mindset. We identify room for improvement. We invest our time in researching and thinking of better strategies to teach our students. We create something new or adapt existing methods. We take risks. We may fail. We try again. We iterate and by doing so establish a culture of innovation and creativity in the classroom that inspires our students to do the same. Students that are actively engaged in their learning are less likely to be absent from the class and more likely to succeed academically.

Innovation in education isn’t a specific term with fixed definitions. The spirit of innovation education is an openness to looking with fresh eyes at problems and to address them in different, new ways. It is a recognition that we don’t have all the answers and are open to new approaches to improve such as methods of knowledge transfer with innovative teaching strategies.

Degrees of Comparison

In grammar, the degrees of comparison relate to adjectives and every adjective and adverb can be written in one of three degrees:

  • The Positive Degree. This offers no comparison. It just tells us about the existence of a quality. For example:
    • adjectives: slow, beautiful, happy
    • adverbs: slowly, beautifully, happily
  • The Comparative Degree. This compares two things to show which has the lesser or greater degree of the quality. For example:
    • adjectives: slower, more beautiful, happier
    • adverbs: more slowly, more beautifully, more happily
  • The Superlative Degree. This compares more than two things to show which has the least or greatest degree of the quality. For example:
    • adjectives: slowest, most beautiful, happiest
    • adverbs: most slowly, most beautifully, most happily

The Last Week

On 02/08/2023 Wednesday I announced the date of achievement test. A student from VI. C, Safna, gifted me a paper flower which she made herself. I finished the chapter 'The little Round Red House' this week thus completing all my portions. Thursday We had a revision of the portions for the test. On Friday sixth period I conducted the achievement test. The students were seated according to their roll numbers. Four students were absent and twenty nine were present. On Monday, I conducted the post-test for my project. I checked the answer sheets and found out that most of the children has a tremendous progress.

8/8/2023, Tuesday was the last day of the teaching practice. All of us said goodbye to the institution where we spent the last two months, teaching and at the same time learning from the students. I am so grateful for this opportunity. It was an unforgettable day of my life. The students bought us all, small gifts such as candies and pens. Many did paper crafts and gifted it to us as a memory. I got some feed backs from my students and they told me that they will miss me a lot. It was a wonderful day. I showed them my innovative teaching materials about 'Degrees of Comparison' and 'Synonyms-Antonyms'.

'Synonyms-Antonyms' was my innovative teaching material from third semester. I decided to show the students, this one, because they were not able to understand the topics. It was difficult for them to understand what a synonym was. I noted this from the achievement test. Most of them had doubts about one particular question which asked them to write the synonym of the given word.

'Degree of Comparison is my fourth semester's innovative teaching material. I had already taught them the concept. I used this teaching aid to give a more clear idea and to use it as a worksheet. I asked them to read the words given in all three degrees of comparison and add more adjectives to it. It turned out to be a language exercise.

Later in the evening, a staff meeting was called for which we were also invited. The teachers of Mount Tabor G.H.S thanked us for our service and we explained our immense gratitude in helping us to successfully complete our teaching practice.

New Week, New Chapter.

The new week started with a new chapter- " The Little Round Red House" written by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. I also had many substitution periods in the class VI.C, where I had to teach Malayalam. I had started the language activities for my project in VIII.H and it's been going great so far. 29/07/2023, Saturday was also a working day with Friday's timetable. This week ended with some great performances from my students. As part of the language activities I have been conducting, the students were given scripts and asked to read the dialogues with appropriate emotions according to the punctuation given. Rather than just reading they presented it as a play, scene by scene.
